8 grade Exam in English - what does the exam look like?

by Lidia Fedio

Here are some tips you may use as you study for your graduation exam.  The sooner you start - the more material you can revise and the better results you can achieve.

Firstly, learn how the exam works. What are the parts of it? They are well-known, why don't prepare yourself for it, if you can?

The exam will last 90 minutes - and that's the time to show off 8 years of your knowledge.
If you have e.g. dyslexia you will write 120 min.

If you don't wish to read further and you want to know more watch this video prepared by Centralna Komisja Edukacyjna:

The constant parts of the exam are:

1. Listening comprehension - słuchanie ze zrozumieniem

usually you will find a few tasks. Often the answers will be A,B,C or T/F. Sometimes it is a longer text where you have to fill in the information from the recording. One of the exercises will be open.

Remember - the order of the questions is strict. Answer to the first question comes first, then question two and so on. You don't have to jump from the end to the back.

- Listen twice! Don't jump to the next task while the recording plays for the second time - always carefully check your answers.

- The exercises often involve all the words included in the aswers. Don't circle the first word you hear, they might be given to trick you.

2. Language functions- funkcje językowe

This task is often something to listen to or to read. You often have to match answers. It checks whether you can communicate in English in everyday situations. An example task is 4 speakers saying one sentence to which you have to match a correct answer:

Speaker 1 : I have passed my driving licence exam:

answer - Congratulations!

It is often a fast and difficult task. But if you practice a lot - you won't have problems with it.

3. Reading comprehension  - rozumienie tekstu czytanego

You will be given a couple of texts. To each of them there are going to be questions. Either open or closed.

4.  Linguistic measures - środki językowe

This part checks your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.  You can expect a lot of tasks where you will be asked to fill the gaps, match, name the pictures, choosing short dialoges answers.

5. Writing - pisanie

You will be asked to write a text that has a given subject. The instruction will be given in 3 or 4 dots. You must use all the information they ask.

The first sentence will be given - it doesn't count to the number of words.

They will ask you to write 50-120 words. Each word counts as long as it is not repetition on purpose.

The types of the texts are only a few, and it's easy to learn how to write all of them.
Just do it!
You might come across:

- an email - most likely the examinators ask you to write an email, even if not - the rest of the forms is very similar

- a note

-announcement

-invitation

-message

-blog entry

The last page of the exam is the answet sheet. You MUST put all the answers there.

Don't forget to bring your student's ID and black pens!
