 History

The name "Chicago" is derived from a French rendering of the indigenous Miami-Illinois word shikaakwa for a wild relative of the onion, known to botanists as Allium tricoccum and known more commonly as ramps.

In 1857, Chicago was already the largest city in the northeast of the then United States and had over 90,000 residents. In 1933, Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was fatally wounded in Miami, Florida during a failed assassination attempt on President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1933 and 1934, the city celebrated its centennial by hosting the Century of Progress International Exposition Worlds Fair. The theme of the fair was technological innovation over the century since Chicago's founding.

Economy

Chicago has the third-largest gross metropolitan product in the United States - about $670.5 billion according to September 2017 estimates.

The city has also been rated as having the most balanced economy in the United States, due to its high level of diversification.

 Currency

In the US use United States Dollar (USD). It equals something about 3,70 PLN. It can use the sign “$”.

 Attractions

The most famous attractions in Chicago is among others Willis Towers and glass balcony. It’s probably the most beautiful and the highest skyline in Chicago!

The next cool thing which worth seeing it’s so modern Millennium Park it’s place where is recognisable sign of Chicago. This is Cloud Gate but often it’s called by The Bean due to shape. Inspiration of this sculpture was a drop of mercury. The author is Anish Kapoor.

Near the “bean” is remarkable fountain - Crown Fountain. On this fountain it shows much faces inhabitants of Chicago. I heard about Lincoln Park ZOO too. Probably it’s one of the coolest ZOO in which I was.

The most famous street in Chicago is Michigan Avenue, probably it’s nice place to see.

Chicago’s cuisine

Chicago cuisine isn’t very different from typical American cuisine. If you want to feel like a native American, you must try a bloody steak, delicious hot dog and hamburger, whose size will amaze many a gourmet and the famous Deep Dish Pizza (thick, fried in deep fat).

In addition to typical fastfoods, you can find here the richness of cuisine from many corners of the world. The inhabitants of Chicago, like the whole United States, are a mix of immigrants from many different cultures, so in the city you can dine in your favorite cuisine: Italian, French, Chinese, Mexican, Thai etc.

Thanks to many Poles, in Chicago is not a problem to buy our typical products, you can also find a luxury rarity here - real bread from a Polish bakery :).
